Frequently asked questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions and we will be updating this semi-regularly.

Can I use my version 2 license key with a version 3 client?

Absolutely. We encourage everyone to upgrade as soon as possible.

What's the difference between community and commercial

The community edition has the following limitations set on the client:

  • A 15 second nag screen
  • Save and Export has been disabled
  • Limited zoom levels
  • Can only run transforms on a single entity at a time
  • Cannot copy and paste text from detailed view
  • Transforms limited to 75 per day
  • Throttled client to TAS communication - e.g. slower

The commercial version also has these benefits:

  • More updated TAS (transform application server) means you get the latest transforms and updates quicker as well as having a higher priority server
  • Ability to save graphs for use with other Maltego clients
  • No community edition limitations (zoom levels, nag screen, 75 transforms/day limit, copy and paste)

If this is open source, where can I get the source?

Open source intelligence, not be confused with open source software. Let's Google it and read the very first hit:[1]

Open source intelligence (OSINT) is form of intelligence collection management that involves finding, selecting, and acquiring information from publicly available sources and analyzing it to produce actionable intelligence. In the intelligence community (IC), the term "open" refers to overt, publicly available sources (as opposed to covert or classified sources); it is not related to open-source software or public intelligence.

History: The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) was created in 1941 to access and exploit OSINT in relation to World War II. A classic example of their value and success is reflected in the price of oranges in Paris as an indicator of whether railroad bridges had been bombed successfully.

Sources (open) used in Maltego are search engines, DNS, whois record, PGP keyservers, open ports/services, historical DNS databases, social networks, etc, etc.

OSI have been around before then term was connected in popular media with software.

What is logged?

On the Paterva CTAS the following is logged when you run a transform:

  • API key
  • IP Address (yours)
  • The transform executed
  • The time it executed
  • Your user ID (which gives first name, last name and email address)
  • Note: we do NOT log the questions asked or the results

Some transform uses web services contained on the server. These are:

  • Transforms that uses meta information contained documents
  • Transforms that uses information in the mirror of sites

These web services log the question asked in a standard web server log.

When you register we log:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email address
  • Time registered
  • Time first used
  • How many transform you ran
  • MAC address you selected
  • Your operating system type and version, but not details of service packs etc.
  • GUI version

When you start the application the HTML that is contained in the start page is downloaded from the website. The request ends up in normal web server logs.

Obviously this information will never be given or sold to a 3rd party unless required so by law.
