Paterva is a small, privately held company located in Irene, South Africa. It’s main business is that of developing information gathering tools and information gathering services. The company has it’s roots in the information security industry. Paterva was started in 2007 by Roelof Temmingh. Paterva developed the product Maltego in partnership with PinkMatter – another South African development company. Maltego was in beta for around 18 month before it went commercial in May 2008. Also in 2008 Paterva extended its services to include information gathering services (IGS). IGS was started for two reasons - 1) we like to push the boundaries of our software and make sure it is useful for the information gathering industry. This exposure to real life can only be accomplished by 'eating your own dog food'. A direct result of this 'real life' exposure was the development of the Maltego Mesh - that was released in 2009. 2) We like to think we are really good at finding information on the Internet - be that people, organizations or infrastructure.

Roelof Temmingh has been working in the security industry for 15 years. After completing his degree in electronic engineering he worked for a crypto development house for 5 years before he co-founded SensePost in 2000 as technical director. He later headed up the innovation centre where he developed many successful security assessment tools, contributed to several books (such as Aggressive Network Self-Defense, How to own a continent, Nessus Network Auditing) and spoke at numerous international security conferences (Blackhat, Defcon, FIRST, RSA, HiTB, Ruxcon amongst others) At the start of 2007 he left SensePost to start Paterva. Since starting Paterva he spoke at nine international conferences (CansecWest and BlueHat amongst others) - mainly about Maltego, virtual identities, information gathering and social botnets.

Thinking he’ll actually learn something useful, Andrew MacPherson joined Paterva in 2008, two years after completing his degree in information science, and has been brewing tea and starting fires ever since. Occasionally he codes too.
