Hi,

I love Maltego!!!! However, I have a small problem - I''ve installed the Community version on five Windows machines with varying success. Even though they all have the latest version of Java installed(version 6 update 6), I can only get Maltego to start on two machines. At least two of the machines did not have a previous Java version installed, but Maltego refuses to run. I have followed the advice in the troubleshooting guide to define the Java path explicitly without success.

cheers! Cheesy

Hi there. Follow these steps:
1. Make sure you are using the correct Java version to run the program. See http://ctas.paterva.com/view/Known_Bugs#Application_does_not_start...at_all Multiple versions of Java on the same box is bound to ruin your day. You said you''ve checked that out - so let''s move on.
2. Open a DOS window. CD to the /bin directory. Run ''maltego_w.exe''. It will show debugging info on the console. See if you spot anything obviously wrong.
3. Open a DOS window. Run ''java -version''. We''ve had cases of over eager spyware applications that does not allow java to run. Make sure that it shows you version 1.6. If not - remove the older version if you can, or goto 1.
4. Maltego keeps a log file of things that go wrong. It''s in c:/Documents and Settings/[your username]/Application Data/.maltego/v2.0CE/var/log/messages.log. Wipe the logs, start Maltego fresh, and see if it complains bitterly about something.
5. If all else fails - send us the complete OS version, the log file mentioned in 4. and the complete Java version. Also, if it makes sense, send along a screen shot (e.g. if there''s anything - see 2).

Hopefully 2. and 4. will give you something to work with. Hope this helps,
RT

PS: and if you do figure out what''s wrong with your installation - let us know!

No joy I''m afraid.

C:Program FilesMaltegoCEinmaltego_w.exe

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

C:Program FilesMaltegoCEin>java -version

java version "1.6.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode, sharing)

I looked for c:/Documents and Settings/[your username]/Application Data/.maltego/v2.0CE/var/log/messages.log but there was only a /dev version from an earlier installation. I copied the c:/Documents and Settings/[your username]/Application Data/.maltego/v2.0CE/ directory from a working installation, but that didn''t work either, and no entries were made to the /messages.log.

CG,

OK - the problem is that Maltego tries to reserve too much memory. You can set the amount of memory it tries to reserve in the maltego.conf file (in the /etc directory of the install). You might want to change the line that reads:

default_options="-J-Xms64m -J-Xmx1024m --laf javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel"
to something like
default_options="-J-Xms32m -J-Xmx256m --laf javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel"

Keep in mind that this will influence the performance of the application quite drastic.
I am pretty certain that will sort you out. Let us know if it does not!

Yee ha!! That''s the ticket!  Grin

You may want to set that as a default for the community edition, which is likely to be installed on less highly specc''d machines.
